Repairs to Historic Chapels Trust Buildings

Bethesda Methodist Chapel, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent
A phased scheme of repairs, likely to cost £2.5million in total, is under way. The first phase of repairs started in May 2006 and was completed in September 2007. The first phase has addressed:

- The complete overhaul and repair of the roof structure, including re-slating.
- Other essential high level repairs to brickwork.
- Renewal of rainwater pipes and repair of drainage.
- Elimination of dry rot. - Removal of pigeon guano and debris within the church, installation of a clear cover over windows to allow natural light into to building.
- Full repair of the front elevation and rebuilding of roof of front colonnade.
The work has cost approximately £900,000 and has been grant aided by the North Staffordshire Regeneration Zone, Heritage Lottery Fund, English Heritage, City of Stoke on Trent Council, plus funds raised by Historic Chapels Trust and Friends of Bethesda. Our architect will shortly commence the work required to design the next phase of repairs.

In the meantime our local committee has organised a series of monthly Open Days, which started with over 1,000 people visiting on 8 September 2007. See events for future events.

Biddlestone RC Chapel, near Netherton, Northumberland

HCT has prepared proposals for a package of repairs which will include improvements to public access. The works were completed in April 2008.

Coanwood Friends Meeting House, near Haltwhistle, Northumberland
Repaired and open to the public.

Cote Baptist Chapel, Nr Aston, Oxfordshire.
Open to the public for visits, events and hirings. A small outbuilding can be used independently.

Dissenters’ Chapel, Kensal Green Cemetery, London
Repaired and upgraded and open to the public. Open to the public every Sunday afternoon until 4.30pm. Cemetery tours also on Sunday afternoons at 2.00pm starting at the Anglican Chapel.

Farfield Friends Meeting House, West Yorkshire
Repaired and open to the public.


Longworth RC Chapel, Bartestree, Herefordshire
HCT's architect has prepared proposals for the full repair of the building and English Heritage have awarded a grant of £143,000. Further fundraising is now being actively undertaken from a wide variety of sources. A well attended public meeting was held in April 2008 and a local committee created.

Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes, Blackpool, Lancashire
Proposals for the full repair of the building have been prepared by our architect.

Funding has been obtained for a first phase of work, which will cost just over £100,000. The first phase consisted of repairs to the leaking copper roof and re-designing a defective rainwater disposal system Grants have been received from English Heritage, Sita Environmental Trust, Duchy of Lancaster Benevolent Fund, Trust House Foundation, and Hartsheath Charitable Trust. Additional donations have been received by the Historic Chapels Trust and funds raised by the HCT's local committee.

Work on the first phase started in January 2008 and was completed in April 2008.

Penrose Methodist Chapel, Cornwall
Repair work completed December 2004. Open to the public. Minor redecoration works are due to take place in Summer 2008.

St Benet’s Chapel and Presbytery, Netherton, Merseyside
Presbytery fully repaired and used as a private dwelling. Main external envelope of the chapel in good repair. Proposals for full repair of the interior being prepared by HCT’s architect. Not open to visitors except by prior arrangement.

St George’s German Lutheran Church, Tower Hamlets, London
Repaired and open to the public.

Salem Chapel, East Budleigh, Devon
Major repairs now completed.

Todmorden Unitarian Church, West Yorkshire
Major repairs and upgrading completed. Available for events.
Ongoing restoration of the designed landscape to the gardens and burial ground, which is being grant aided by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Construction of new kitchen/toilet facility started in April 2008 and is due to be completed by June 2008.
Open to the public. Events organised by local friends

Umberslade Baptist Church, Tanworth in Arden, Warwickshire
A first phase of repairs costing around £500,000 started in February 2007 and was completed in March 2008. The repairs included replacing the slates on the roof, repairing roof timbers and various stonework repairs to the church and tower.

Wainsgate Baptist Chapel, near Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire
Has come into the care of HCT in late 2004.
The Architectural Heritage Fund has awarded a £7,500 grant towards the cost of an Options Appraisal exercise. Wiles and Macquire architects of York have been commissioned to undertake the Options Appraisal – which is due to be completed by Spring 2007.

Wallasey Unitarian Church, Merseyside
Repaired and open to the public. Disabled lift access.
Wallasey School of Ballet now using the church hall.

Walpole Old Chapel, Suffolk
Repaired and open to the public. Annual events programme. Facilities block.

14 June, 7.30 pm The return of singer/songwriter duo Patti Vetta
and Alan Franks. Singer Patti vetta and singer/songwriter Alan Franks have been performing together and recording Alan's songs for some years. The songs are comic and satirical and also poetic and reflective as one would expect from an award winning poet. Patti turned prfessional in her teens and travelled the world with the Settlers, and singing with Johnny Cash and the Everly Brothers.
