Repairs to Historic Chapels Trust Buildings
Bethesda Methodist Chapel, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent
A phased scheme of repairs, likely to cost £2.5million in total,
is under way. The first phase of repairs started in May 2006 and was completed
in September 2007. The first phase has addressed:
- The complete overhaul
and repair of the roof structure, including re-slating.
- Other essential high level repairs to brickwork.
- Renewal of rainwater pipes and repair of drainage.
- Elimination of dry rot. - Removal of pigeon guano and debris within
the church, installation of a clear cover over windows to allow natural
light into to building.
- Full repair of the front elevation and rebuilding of roof of front colonnade.
The work has cost approximately £900,000 and has been grant aided
by the North Staffordshire Regeneration Zone, Heritage Lottery Fund, English
Heritage, City of Stoke on Trent Council, plus funds raised by Historic
Chapels Trust and Friends of Bethesda. Our architect will shortly commence
the work required to design the next phase of repairs.
